The heat pushed the players to the limit

Andalusian 3×3 U17 Championship for clubs, second edition.

Physical waste along with high temperatures

The Andalusian 3×3 U17 Men’s Championship for clubs 2023-2024 took place on May 25 in one of the urban squares in the “frying pan” of Spain. With a purely urban character, it was played on three sports courts built for the event in the Plaza de España in Andújar, Jaén, which allowed passers-by to enjoy the sport of basket ball live, right in the street. However, the temperature rose to 34 degrees Celsius and the basketball players suffered the harshness of the weather conditions with vomiting, heat stroke and cramps.

The 61 male players up to 17 years of age who were part of the 16 participating teams in the men’s category, champions and runners-up of all the Andalusian provinces, played outdoors and suffered the ravages of the heat. It was an episode of extreme heat that in recent days had left several records for maximum and minimum temperatures in this town of Jaén. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), 5 days before the championship was held, Andújar reached 42.3 degrees Celsius, a record for the maximum temperature in the history of a month of May in Spain.

The heat affected all participating teams equally, but it had a greater impact on the performance of some more than others. Among the most affected was the Club Baloncesto San Pedro team sponsored by IGGA GROUP, winner of the Málaga 3×3 U17 Men’s Championship. While the Málaga runner-up, CAB Estepona, defeated its rivals and reached the Andalusian final to win it, the Sampedreños, well below their possibilities due to the heat, lost one of the three games they played in group C, causing a triple tie that left them eliminated from the competition by a single point.

The best player of IGGA GROUP CBSP 3×3 U17 was number 3, Nicolás García Karpenko.

Despite the heat, Karpenko, at 16 years old, was MVP of team, game and group on the first round. And in the general classification of the Andalusian championship, he was one of the best rookies in the championship and the player who scored the most points on his team, 13 of 32 points (41%). Despite playing only three games due to his team’s early elimination in the group stage, he was the seventh player in the competition with the highest average of three-points per game, with one shot of 3 points per game, and had the ninth best average of points per game in the general classification, with 4.33 points per game. Although the organization did not compute the rest of the statistics, Karpenko’s averages were spectacular. He averaged 6 rebounds, 3 steals, 1.7 blocks, 1.3 assists and 2.3 fouls received per game.
